Web Evaluation

It is extremely easy to publish on the web, so the guiding rule is always the same as with books:

Don’t believe everything you read!

How to tell if you’re at a good website:

bullet

AUTHOR

Does the author list where he/she went to school?  How do you know if he/she is qualified?  Is there even an author listed?  You should be able to find out where the author got the knowledge or experience to write the site.  Also, you should be able to email the author  with comments, questions, or suggestions.

bullet

LINKS

Are there any links to other websites, or do all the links stay within this site?  The site should link to sites with similar information so that it can be checked for accuracy.

Do all the links work?  Broken links show that the site hasn't been checked or updated and the information may be out-of-date.

bullet

INFORMATION

Can you find any other sites with the same information?  If not, then the information may not be correct.

Does the site present all sides of an issue?  Is it biased?  If there is a bias, the author is writing emotionally, and the information may not be accurate.  A reliable site will list all sides to an issue or a story.

Are sources listed that give more information?  Just like print material, there should be a bibliography.  You should be able to check the sources used by the author of the website so that the material can be checked for accuracy.

Is copyright information available?  There should be a date listed somewhere.  If there is no copyright date, then look for a date when the site was created or updated.  If the information needs to be current, look for a recent date.  For example, don't use information on medical advances from a site that is too old.

bullet

What's in a name?

Check the domain name to see what type of group or company  produced the website.   .edu = college or university, .org = nonprofit organization, .gov = government,  .com = commercial, .biz = business or commercial (added when too many names for .com), .us (or .can, or .uk) = country of origin - anything that doesn't fit in one of the other domains, such as K-12 schools.  If it looks like it should be scholarly information, but the site is commercial, check it for bias and accuracy.  It may really be advertising.
