Books We Are Reading At School

Each week during circle time, we read a great story.  After reading the book the first time, we'll work on recalling details from the story and retelling the story, using a variety of activities.  We'll often use puppets or props as we act out the story; or we may cut out and sequence pictures to retell the story.  Here are the books we've read so far this year -

August/September: Brown Bear, Brown Bear/I Went Walking/Have You Seen My Cat/Goodnight Gorilla/Seal's on the Bus/Apples Up On Top/The Napping House

October/November: To Be Announced

December/January: To Be Announced

February/March: To Be Announced

Hello Song
Where oh where is my friend (child's name)?
Where oh where is my friend (child's name)?
Where oh where is my friend (child's name)?
There oh there s/he is!

Good-bye Song
Good-bye (child's name),  Good-bye (child's name),  Good-bye (child's name), We're glad you came to school!

Open/Shut Them
Open shut them, open shut them, give a little clap. Open shut them, open shut them, put them in your lap!
Creep them, creep them, creep them, creep them, right up to your chin.
Open wide your little mouth, but do not let them in!

Great Day!
(To the tune of La Cuckla Racha)
We had a good day, we had a great day, so pat yourself on the back.
We had a good day, we had a great day, so pat your friends on the back.

We learned a lot today, as we worked and played; so kiss your brain.
We learned a lot today, as we worked and played; so kiss your brain!

It's time to say so long and end with a song; wave good-bye to your friends.  It's time to say so long and end with a song; wave good-bye to your friends.

Repeat first verse!

The Wheels on the Bus

The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round.  The wheels on the bus go round and round, all through the town.

The driver on the bus says move on back ...
The horn on the bus goes beep, beep, beep ...
The lights on the bus go blink, blink, blink ...
The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish ...
The money on the bus goes clink, clink, clink ...
The babies on the bus go waa, waa, waa ...
The mommies on the bus go sshh, sshh, sshh ...
The people on the bus go up and down, up and down, up and down  ...

Fun Recipes

Playdough

In saucepan combine:  1 cup flour, ½ cup salt and 2 teaspoons cream of tarter.  Add 1 cup of water, mixed with a few drops of food coloring and 1 tablespoon oil.  Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it forms a ball.  (I used my electric mixer – as the dough gets very stiff and hard to stir.)  Remove from pan – cool slightly, and then knead until smooth.  Let cool completely before giving it to children for play.  Store in airtight container (a zip lock bag works well.)  Stays soft for weeks and weeks of fun!

Silly Putty

Pour 8 ounces of Elmer’s glue into a plastic bowl.  Slowly add liquid laundry starch (Stay-flo is the brand I’ve found) mixing with hands until it starts to make a dough.  Stop and mix well before adding more starch – if you add too much starch it will be rubbery and not stretchy to play with.  Gradually add more starch until it stops sticking to your hands as you mix.  Store in an airtight container, like a zip lock bag.  If the putty becomes sticky during play, rub a small amount of liquid starch onto your hands.

Basic Bubble Recipe

1 cup Joy dish detergent

¼ cup sugar

Water

Measure sugar and dish soap into empty gallon milk jug.  Slowly add water to fill the jug.  Put the lid on and gently tip the jug back and forth until the sugar is dissolved.  Use to refill bubble bottles or pour into a shallow dish and try using funnels, spatulas, etc to make bubbles.
