Standards and Interval Benchmarks

Standard 1: Students will sing or play an instrument of varied repertoire of music, alone or with others.

Interval Benchmarks (K-12)

· Sings with expression and technical accuracy

· Performs on an instrument with expression and technical accuracy

· Responds to a varied repertoire of music representing different genres and styles

Standard 2: Students will read and notate music.

Interval Benchmarks (K-12)

· Identifies and responds to notes, musical symbols, and terminology

· Identifies and responds to rhythm and meter symbols (standard notation symbols) for pitch,

dynamics, tempo, articulation and expression.

· Performs and notates rhythmic and melodic patterns

Standard 3: Students will create music.

Interval Benchmarks (K-12)

· Improvises melodies, lyrics, and musical expression

· Improvises rhythmic accompaniments

· Creates short songs and instrumental pieces using traditional and non-traditional sounds

Standard 4: Students will listen to, analyze, evaluate, and describe music

· Categorizes various forms and instrumentation of music and identifies specific musical events

· Recognizes and identifies music of various styles

· Critiques the musical performance of self and others

Standard 5: Students will relate music to various historical and cultural traditions within music, the

arts, and other disciplines outside the arts.

· Identifies significant eras of music representing diverse cultures and composers

· Identifies aspects of music and their relationship to various forms of artistic expression (dance,

painting, theater, etc.)

· Connects/integrates music to/with other subject matter across the curriculum
