Food and Nutrition

The National School Lunch Program was instituted by Congress in 1946...."as a measure of national security, to safeguard the health and well-being of the Nation's children and to encourage the domestic consumption of nutritious agricultural commodities and other food...."  The program provides basic financial support for serving lunches that meet federal guidelines to students attending participating schools and institutions.  Additional financial assistance is given for lunches served to students at free or reduced prices based upon their family income and size.

A basic meal, as established by the Secretary of Agriculture, must be offered to students.  The meal includes:

2 ounces of meat or meat alternate
3/4 cup of fruit or vegetable  in 2 or more servings
1 serving of bread or bread alternate
1/2 pint of fluid low fat milk

School meals are tasty economical, often costing less than what you would spend to prepare them at home.  The Food Service Department strives to keep the meal cost low while maintaining quality and nutritional standards.  Each meal provides one-third of a student's daily nutritional requirements.

Lunch

School lunch is an important part of the total educational experience.  The school lunch pattern can help form good habits for a lifetime of eating healthy.

A lunch can be purchased for $1.85 at the elementary schools, $1.95 at the Jr. High School and $2.25-2.75 at the high school.  A reduced priced lunch for eligible students is $.40.

Breakfast

The District serves breakfast at each school building before school everyday.  A breakfast can be purchased for $1.25.  Children eligible for free or reduced priced lunches are eligible for free or reduced priced breakfasts.  A reduced priced breakfast for eligible students is $.30.

Mornings can be so hectic--trying to get everyone off on time.  It's not always possible to make sure your child eats a good breakfast.  Now the school breakfast program guarantees that your child gets a nutritious meal.
