Rosewood Care Center - Veterans History Project |
| PV students went to Rosewood Care Center on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005 and recorded oral histories of veterans to be archived in the Library of Congress. Students listened and recorded stories of an Army Infantry Medic who served in WWII, a Navy Vet who served on a aircraft carrier in WWII, a veteran of the Coast Guard and a Vietnam Veteran. It was a wonderful and emotional experience for everyone involved. | |||

| Each month, during the school year, I take students on a planned service event. We have tried a variety of projects. Take a look of some of the service PVHS students have given to our community. | |||
On August 28, 2004, PVHS students joined forces with the Xstream Clean-up to help clean local streams. Our local streams included: Pigeon Creek in Pleasant Valley, Crow Creek in Bettendorf, Duck Creek in Bettendorf and Davenport, and Silver Creek in LeClaire. Approximately 40 PVHS students helped that wet morning. |

October 21, 2003 Erik Skjerseth, a PVHS junior, worked on the Pleasant View Nature Trail to earn his Eagle Scout Badge several years ago. The trail was in need of mulching again, so Erik made the arrangements to get the job done. Great job, Erik. |

In October, a group of seven freshmen, junior Cassandra Mathias, Mrs. Voss, and Leanna Roberts visited Manor Care Nursing home with decorations in hand. We decorated pumpkins with the residents. The staff at manor Care was extremely helpful. It was a great event. Cassandra is continuing with this as her junior/senior service project. |

| On January 17, 2004, we cleaned one of the Veteran's for Veteran's apartments. The Bettendorf Rotary, along with other Iowa Rotary Clubs, purchased a four-plex apartment complex that they are in the process of restoring for homeless Veterans. The Navy Seabees are involved in the restoration. This was a very meaningful project. We all knew that was we were doing was for a wonderful cause. | |||

| Our February Event was on February 7th, at PVHS. "Affairs of the Heart" was an event sponsored by Genesis Medical Center and was a promotional and educational day concerning heart health. Our students helped as counters and greeters, they helped vendors and helped with clean-up. Not only did the students help with this event, they were able to learn something in the process. I heard a lot of positive feedback from our students about this event. | |||

| The March event seemed to be the favorite of all the events. PVHS Students went to all of our elementary schools to assist with Kindergarten Round-up. This is the first event that we had so many students that wanted to participate that some had to be turned away. It was very obvious that the high school students and the kindergarten students both enjoyed this event. | |||

| The May event was to the Scott Area Recycle Center and Keep Scott County Beautiful to help in their recycle garden. We were rained out in April for this event, so we rescheduled for May 12th, 2004. There were 18 students and Mrs. Voss. The recycle center garden is made up of all recycled products. We mulched, planted trees and flowers, scooped rocks and just missed the rain. |
